Family enjoying time together after receiving postpartum doula support

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a postpartum doula, and who is postpartum support for?

I’m here to help you during those first weeks and months after birth. My role is to support your recovery, help with your infant, and give you space to rest and adjust. Support is helpful for first-time parents and those who’ve been through it before—you don’t need to “struggle” to reach out.

  • How is a postpartum doula different from a night nurse, nanny, or birth doula?

Think of me as your postpartum guide. Unlike a night nurse or nanny, I focus on helping your whole family adjust, teaching and supporting you along the way—not just watching your infant. And unlike a birth doula, I’m here after birth, not during labor.

  • When should we book, and how long does postpartum support last?

Booking during pregnancy is ideal so we can plan ahead, but it’s never too late. Support can last as long as your family needs it—from a few weeks to a couple of months, whatever works best for you.

  • Does insurance cover postpartum doula support?

It depends. Some employer-sponsored benefit programs, such as Carrot, may offer reimbursement when services are paid out of pocket. Many families also use HSA or FSA funds. Coverage varies, so I recommend checking with your insurance provider or employer benefits administrator.

  • What does a typical postpartum doula visit look like?

Every visit is different because every family is different. We might spend time caring for your infant, chatting about sleep or feeding, doing a little light household help, or just making sure you get a chance to shower, eat, or sleep! (or all three!)

  • Do you provide hands-on infant care and feeding support?

Yes! I can show you hands-on techniques for feeding, soothing, and helping your infant sleep. I support all feeding styles—breast, bottle, pumping, or combination—and I’m here to help you feel confident.

  • Do you support partners, twins, or multiples?

Absolutely. I support partners and caregivers too, and I’ve helped families with twins or multiples navigate feeding, sleep, and daily routines.

  • Do you help with household tasks?

Yes! I can help with laundry, dishes, snack and light meal prep, and tidying up to take some of the load off you. I do not provide pet care, and I can’t work in homes with cats because of a severe allergy.

  • How do you support emotional well-being after birth?

I’m here to listen, reassure, and help you feel more confident. Sometimes it’s just having someone check in who understands the ups and downs. I can also guide you on when it might be helpful to reach out to a healthcare professional.

  • What emotional changes are normal after birth?

Mood changes in the first weeks are very common. If you notice feelings that are intense, persistent, or making daily life hard, it’s always a good idea to reach out to your healthcare provider.

  • Can you support families after a NICU stay, unexpected birth, or adoption?

Yes! Every family’s journey is different, and I’m here to support you no matter what your birth or adoption experience has been like.

  • What is outside the scope of postpartum doula support?

I provide non-medical support. I don’t give medical advice, diagnose conditions, provide pet care, or do heavy cleaning—my focus is on supporting you and your family.

  • What areas do you serve, and what are your availability options?

I work with families throughout Northern Virginia, including Fairfax County,  and the DMV area. I can often offer daytime, evening, or overnight support—let’s chat about what will work best for your schedule.

  • Are you trained and certified?

Yes! I’m professionally trained and certified through Best Doulas, and I can show you my certification if you’d like.

  • What should we prepare before your first visit?

Very little! For overnight support, I’ll need a safe, comfortable place to rest—like a bed, couch, or recliner. Overnight care is not awake care all night; that’s a different service and comes at a different rate. I’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect.

  • What if we’re not sure how much support we’ll need?

That’s completely normal. Many families start small and adjust as we go. We’ll figure out what works best for your routine and comfort level.

  • What makes your approach different?

I like to keep things gentle, flexible, and family-focused. My goal is to help you feel supported, confident, and cared for—not rushed or judged.
